Last month we celebrated Levi's sixth birthday with a viking & dragon themed party. It was his first 'friends' party, with his friends from school and not just our own family friends.
I designed & sent these viking themed invitations to all the boys in his class, I sewed some 'hiccup' style viking vests, and Dave got all 'man crafty' on me and made all the weaponry for the boys. (We had a laugh at how much he got into it, staying up late doing party prep - quite the role reversal!!).

I kept food simple, buying some and making some, knowing they would likely just play the whole time anyway (which they did!). The hero of the food was indeed the cake. I saw this viking helmet cake on Sweet & Saucy, and given the transport was impossible, I set out to make something similar but with buttercream (yum!) and not fondant. I was impressed that I got the horns to stay up!!

It ended up pouring down rain, but was still such a fun morning. The boys had to 'earn' each piece of their weaponry with each game. There was sheep launching, dragon fire defending etc. The 'dragon killing' game was the most fun, with hatchets and balloons, and could have gone on for longer had we had more dragon balloons blown up...lesson for next time!

It was a really fun day and the boys totally go into it. Happy birthday handsome boy! xo

OUTDOOR BOY BABY SPRINKLE

Outdoor Boy Baby Sprinkle | Stationery by Polkadot Prints
Last month, one of my very good friends hosted a baby sprinkle for another friend of ours, with a girls dessert night.
Despite bad weather predictions, it turned out to be a clear night in their backyard, and as darkness fell, the tea lights were lit, and it became such a beautiful atmosphere. A small handful of women, celebrating a new little life we were yet to meet. Gorgeous. Even thinking back on it, brings a smile to my face.
Liz did a fantastic job of creating this welcoming table. Knowing the guest of honour was having a boy, everything was in navy & grey with pops of yellow. I designed an invitation according to the style Liz was going with, and then designed matching place cards and a bunting.
I think you'll agree it looked beautiful! What a great setting for a night of great conversation, honouring our friend and celebrating this little life!

PIT LANE RACING INVITATIONS

Pit Lane Invitations
Are you ready race fans?! These are the invitations I designed for Levi's birthday recently. While we didn't do a huge party, (we had just moved and had visitors staying),  we were still catching up for dinner with friends to celebrate his special day. He's at an age we he really 'gets' what birthdays are all about and that a party is a big deal. So I wanted to still do some cute invitations to hand out.

I added a little bit of dimension by rounding one of the corners of the invite with a corner punch. (I even had a keen little helper do that part!)

Then, with the invites being hand-delivered, it meant I could add a few details to the outside of the envelope. Firstly I made some flags with black & white checkered paper folded over toothpicks (free digital paper with the invitation purchase).
Sticking them to front of the 'envelope' aka paper bag. Then covered the sticks with a party dot. I think they turned out pretty cute! And there were no prizes for guessing the theme when our guests got their invitation.

I saw this invitation too today. I really love a tactile well thought out invite. It makes me feel better knowing I'm not the only invitation geek out there!

UNDER THE SEA PRINTABLES

Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket
In an effort to have a few more boy designs in the shop this year, I've just added this cute Under the Sea theme (finally!). You may remember the invite you voted on here and the resulting customer party here.

With some bigger boy designs on their way soon, this one leans a bit more toward the littler men in your life, complete with their cute smiley face! (Invite available with or without photo).

And how about that whale and starfish? Big thank you to Bubble & Sweet for these adorable sea creature cookies! Wouldn't they be a perfect addition to your Under the Sea party?

FLYING HIGH PLANE COOKIES

If only I knew Linda back when I hosted Levi's Flying High party. I can't believe how well these cookies match my design; miles better than my attempt! Thanks so much for sharing Linda on the blog today!
....................................................

Hi it's Linda here from Bubble and Sweet Blog and I'm so happy to be over here at Polkadot Prints for a special guest post to show y'all how you can make up some decorated plane cookies to match the awesome flying high printable range.
I've always loved the flying high printable range and thought it was a great kids party range, but with the news that Jordan will soon be leaving Australia for Canada, I've decided it would make a fabulous bon voyage party range as well ;)
Ok lets get onto the tutorial....
Flying High aeroplane cookie
You will need an aeroplane cookie cutter to make this cookie. I got my cutter in a big bucket of plastic cookie cutters that cost under $20 for 100 cutters which is pretty good value. Any cutters you will not be using for cookies you can give to the kids to use with playdoh. Fondant, food colour, edible pens and other decorating ingredients can be found at large craft stores (eg. Spotlight and Michael's) or specialty cake decorating stores.
Ingredients
Aeroplane shaped sugar cookies Fondant (ready roll type) coloured light blue, white, black and orange using gel food colors (like Americolor or Wilton brand) small plastic rolling pin cornflour (cornstarch) for dusting Aeroplane cookie cutter small round fondant cutter (2cm or 3/4") brush and water Icing tip (Wilton #12) black edible pen * Fondant dries out fast, work quickly and when not in use pop it into a ziplock bag or air tight container. Knead before use to make more pliable.  Make the round orange 'motors'. Dust the workbench with a little cornflour, roll out the orange fondant until thin and even and using the round cookie cutter cut out shapes.
Place the rounds onto a tray or covered in baking paper and then using the small end of the #12 tip cut out a circle from the middle of the round. Allow these rounds to dry for a couple of hours.
Dust the workbench with a little cornflour, roll out the light blue fondant until thin and even and using the aeroplane cookie cutter cut out shapes. Brush the cookie lightly with a little water and using the small rolling pin adhere the fondant to the cookie pressing down lightly with the roller.
Dust the workbench and roll our a small amount of the black fondant (if you find you are having trouble with the cornflour showing you can use a little vegetable shorting instead). Using the small end of the #12 tip cut out 3 small circles for each plane. Place the black rounds onto the fondant covered aeroplane cookies down the body of the plane in between the wings. If you need to use the brush and water to adhere the black disks, only use a very small amount otherwise the black fondant will bleed. Pinch off small pieces of orange fondant flatten into circles with your fingertips and press onto the black rounds. Dust the workbench with a little cornflour, roll out the white fondant until thin and even and using the aeroplane cookie cutter cut out just the aeroplane's nose, then using a sharp knife, cut where the nose meets the rest of the plane, and then around .75cm into the nose make another cut so you end up with a strip of white fondant. Gently curve the stripe and place it onto the fondant covered cookie, just inside where the nose meets the plane body where the cockpit of the plane would be.
Allow the cookies to dry/set a for a couple of hours. Once set you can use a black edible pen to draw stitching around the edge of the cookie.
Mix a little bit of the orange fondant with water so it becomes a little tacky and use the tacky orange fondant as glue to stick the round orange 'motors' you made earlier - one on each wing.
Thanks Jordan for the invite to come on over and visit - and I hope y'all enjoyed this tutorial .

Linda has recently launched a kid-friendly cook book "Sweets on a Stick". You can purchase your copy with lots of fun ideas via her blog here.

DOWN ON THE FARM

Photobucket
Happy Monday everyone! It's time to head down to the farm as I share my last new design with you.
This is an older invitation that I re-designed with new colours (originally orange, brown & green) and had the lovely Naomi take much better photos than my original version!

I kind of like the farmyard theme because it's not gender specific.  The invitation even comes with your choice of boy or girl farmer depending on the guest of honour. They're cuties!

I have had a few requests for this theme since it has been out of my store, but you can now find the whole collection here :: Invitation | Buffet Label | Party Dots | Thank you Tag | Straw/Party Tabs | Treat Box | Drink Bottle Label | Carton Label.

Happy farmyard party planning!

ARRGGHHH...A PIRATES LIFE FOR ME!

Photobucket
I had other things planned for the blog today, but they can wait because...I woke this morning to find one of my collaborated party's featured over at Kara's Party Ideas. That's a pretty good start to the day in my books!

I teamed up with Whimsy Petite Styling on this party. (You may remember the Kite party we worked on together?) I designed a new printable collection for the occasion and went 'treasure shopping' aka junk yard shopping, while Tash pretty much did all the grunt to make the props and theme shine (a good deal for me! :)
Photobucket
The guest of honour was a 6yr old boy, and I think he and his 'crew' had the best time scaling all the challenges given to them in order to obtain clues to their hidden treasure!
Photobucket Photobucket Photobucket
Each guest had a place at the banquet table on the deck where their lunch was waiting.

What a spread! It was such a fun party! Great job Tash and huge thanks to Kara for sharing!
